Household & Yard Refuse
JEFF FRISBIE, ASST SUPERINTENDENT DPW - (607) 257-6166
Household Refuse (garbage) will be collected once a week on the assigned day for each neighborhood. PLEASE REFER TO SCHEDULE. When a collection day falls on a holiday, that collection day will be delayed one day. Village Public Works holidays are: New Year's Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Garbage cans should be placed at the roadside by 7:30 a.m. the morning of your assigned collection day. Household trash should be in one large plastic bag inside a securely covered garbage container, no larger than 33 gallons to allow handling by one person. Plastic bags outside containers will not be picked up. Each container must have affixed a TRASH TAG each time it is put out. Trash tags may be purchased at the Village Office, Wegman’s, and the North Triphammer Road branches of P & C and Tops Friendly Market. Garbage cans must be removed from the roadside by nightfall of the collection day. Builder’s refuse is the responsibility of the builder or individual resident and will not be collected by Village forces.
Yard Refuse, small brush and leaves in containers (no plastic bags), and branches up to 3” in diameter and large brush will be collected the first Friday of each month. No tags required. Grass clippings, stones and soil will not be collected. In the fall only (approx. Oct. 15 to Dec. 15) leaves placed in piles near the road will be collected with the vacuum machine. Avoid mixing sticks and stones with the leaves, as they will damage the machine. In the spring put leaves in cans for pick-up.
Bulky Trash, household objects too large for the garbage can, such as appliances, furniture, mattresses etc., will be collected the 3rd Friday of each month. Place objects on the curbside, no tags are required. Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners must have a tag indicating that the refrigerant was removed by a certified recycler. Metal and non-metal bulky trash is collected separately, and must be out by 7:30 am. The DPW staff will travel and pick up on each Village road only once. (Construction debris and tires will not be picked up.)
Recycling is provided by Superior Disposal, contractor for Tompkins County, collects glass, tin and aluminum cans, tin foil, plastic bottles #1 and #2, newspaper, flattened cardboard, magazines, junk mail, and office paper in provided containers on designated Fridays every other week. If the collection day falls on a holiday, it will be picked up the following day (Saturday). For problems with pick-up or information, call Tompkins County Solid Waste at 273-6632.
It is the responsibility of each property owner to ensure that yard refuse does not block roadways, sidewalks, drainage ditches, or in any other way impair vehicle or pedestrian safety.
Please call the Village DPW at 257-6166 with any questions/concerns about late garbage, trash, bulky pickup, or snow removal. If there is no answer, leave a message on the answering machine.
